One of the most significant works in Argentine literature is written in verse and is part of what was known as gaucho literature. It tells the story of the poor Martín Fierro, who feels everything is taken from him—his family, his home, and his life—when he is forcibly taken to serve on the frontier with the indigenous people under the so-called "conscription law." Fierro becomes a fugitive after an incident in the barracks, and just as he is about to be captured, a brave sergeant, Cruz, stands by his side and allows resistance. Together, they decide to cross the border and live with the indigenous people. However, what they find there is that life is even harsher. This first part was published in 1872, and the so-called "Return of Martin Fierro" in 1879. The latter is more reflective, narrating Fierro's return after Cruz has died of smallpox, the reunion with his children, and the famous teachings of the Old Vizcacha.
